A football league in Nottingham is turning weight loss into a team sport and giving men a chance to reclaim their confidence, health, and happiness.

Man v Fat is a nationwide football program built specifically for men with a BMI over 27.5.

The teams play five-a-side games weekly, which include regular weigh-ins and awarding points for goals scored along with kilos lost.

The result is a league where fitness and friendship go hand-in-hand, and for many, it is a lifeline.

In Nottingham, more than 100 men participate each week across 12 teams, with around 50 more on the waiting list. Even though the league is just 14 weeks long, its impact remains years afterwards.

Ivan, 44, tired of failing with traditional weight-loss methods, came across Man v Fat on Facebook. Five weeks in and he has already lost 11kg.

He said, “I’ve always been a big guy.

“The gym never worked for me, and seeing all those fit people made me hate myself.

“But here, we’re all fighting the same battle.

“No one judges you; instead, we motivate each other.”

Now weighing 222kg, Ivan says the emotional support from teammates has been just as powerful as the physical benefits.

“Sometimes you have a bad weekend where you eat too much, gain weight, and feel guilty.

“But the next day, we talk about it as a team.

“That burden just lifts off your shoulders,” he added.

Coach Ryan James leads the Nottingham division and has watched hundreds of men transform. Beyond coaching drills and managing teams, he is helping men completely change their outlook on health, confidence, and community.

He said, “It’s not easy to take the first step.

“But once they do, they realize this isn’t just about weight loss.

“It aims at building confidence, improving mental health, and creating a community and a safe space.”

The points earned by each team are through a combination of match results and collective weight loss. That structure creates accountability but also celebration.

Ryan said, “You see it on their faces when they progress.

“It gives me a different kind of happiness to see them gain confidence and believe in themselves again.”

Man v Fat may be about shedding pounds, but in Nottingham, it is helping men drop their shame, gain a brotherhood, and find the version of themselves they thought was out of reach.
